Art With a Heart

Hi, it's been a while since my last entry, rough months if you know what I'm talking about. Anyway, there are couple of things that I think I have to share just to clear up something that's been in my head for a while, as well as for myself. If you took time to read, I'd be appreciate.

Most of the time, I have noticed when I compliment a work, people just do not believe it. They think I'm fake, or maybe I'm just saying it out for the sake of impression or what, and look, I'm not saying that I'm good for saying something like this. And I usually don't explain to people to clear some misunderstanding, because I personally think it is not my responsibility to think what other think of me, but I've learned that sometimes it is necessary to do so.

Let me explain my own definition of art, I understand it's quite a subjective thing, but everyone should have their own value and so have I. And I've mentioned this in my last journal too with different emphasis, but generally for me, art should be judge by your heart. When I tell you that something is beautiful, it is beautiful. Sometimes I feel reluctant tho to say it because people just don't believe it. And I think I know why.

I would like to explain it further by using a few example here. When you look at a painting of a famous painter, like Da Vinci for example. Do you think it's beautiful? If so why? If not why? You move on to another painting, it's a painting done by Michaelangelo, again the same questions, then why? And whether you think they look beautiful or not, I doubt, I certainly sure that you did not compare this two artwork to judge it's beauty.

Now my point has been made clear, I think a lot of people judge a work by comparison especially in the industry, in school, in college. I'm not saying that it's wrong, but it is somehow quite inappropriate to think that every one thinks the same way, I'm one of them to say at least. I do not compare any form of artwork to judge the beauty of an art, it's all based on my heart, my feeling.

Well now you believe? Maybe not, I know what I'm missing here. See, there is a difference between the works by the people I know versus people that I don't. It is the effort that I see, effort to me is most certain a beautiful thing too. Everyone starts from a different ground, and to me, it is improper to compare them for their result and sometimes it's quite sad that people fail to see the effort behind the work. In my humble opinion, especially the lecturers, should at least see this for the least and not demanding for high quality of work only! There are people who are struggling their best to cope up and it's not helping them by stepping on their head.

Before I end this let me make use of my subscription a little by posting a picture.

Big deal, you can do better than this no? What if I say that it's a painting done by an elephant for saving-asian-elephants-from-extinction campaign? Beautiful? no?

Art does have a heart, the moment you created it, you've made a heart for it. I can see it, and it's very very beautiful. Have a nice day people. :D

There are people who argue that art is not only about beauty. I have attend one critique class when somebody draw some nasty realistic head split open with gluey blood juice flow out from the skull. only 3 out of 20+ student(excluding me -A-;; i wanted to eat my dinner...blinded) find it beautiful. But his pieces end up to be an outstanding one for the day, and was complimented: "...art that evoke emotion.." something like that, I remember. Just wanted to share with u and challenge Randize's indestructible Philosophy of Art theory.

yea, i can understand that every people have their own stand and i respect. every individual is different and i'm just telling people how i feel about art. certainly of course, it's not all about beauty in appearance, but there's something that you find is beautiful. and that's what matter the most.

huhaha u sounded like most of the Eastern artist, less commercial art oriented.

hey hey. I totally agree with everything u say. And definitely on the lecturer seeing students' work. Now I think that LCK is the best example, he doesnt just go and see student's artwork whether it looks nice. There are a few students are quite..well..weak.. (not saying that im super good or anything), but then LCK does see their improvement, from last term til now. And ofcuz he knows whether the student did try and put in their effort or did they just copy the drawing from somewhere.

And I also agree on the individual's view on one's artwork. Different people has their own definition of art. What we shd do is just listen to other's feedback and do the thinking on our own. =)

And i saw that picture before. Saw it on youtube. :D it was amazing. The elephant did everything step by step, pick the colours and all. Amazing. :D

Thanks for reading man. m(_ _)m

inspiring mate :) its good to just let it out. i agree with you that beauty in art is subjective. And for what its worth i dont think your fake or anything whenever u comment on my work or anybody elses. ill accept any type of comment and am always ready for some nasty ones as well coz wheres theres light theres shadows too right. well.. thats how i think of it. and seeing the elephant do that painting makes me feel like theres some sort of decency and humbleness within it itself. and plus the elephant so keng one dont need to do rough ins just go straight to sillhoutte waaaahhh haha.. proooo~ Anyways keep it up man dont let anything bring you down ur doing good! :D

very interesting journal post-made all the more meaningful by the last picture
It's true of a lot or artists- or even art instructors. Sometimes there's the perception that they generally compliment out of the sheer sake of it- and of course, this perception's wrong.
I think its not the amount, but the quality of the comment and critique. When ya c&c my work, I really take it as a genuine outlook on how I'd improve, and the avenues by which certain aspects can be modified or pushed to another degree closer to a substantially finished work. Similarly, I do not favourite pieces- not out of elitism, but bacause I feel that I contribute more to posting a helpful critique or comment than by just clicking on 'add as favourites' and giving a one-worded response. You make me motivated to start my own post in the future concerning this idea of comment and criticising :)

Oh, and about the art argument- yeah, you got one aspect of it correct- perspective. Art appreciation is also partly based on reception towards its aesthetic qualities, and whether one can subconsciously associate the message within to their own personal experiences- its what makes some art pieces 'resonate' to us, but not to others. This is how we can also sometimes fall down the trap of trying to 'intellectualise' some art pieces based on the amount of effort put into it. I would be more inclined to complement an individual's direction and cumulative effort at the end rather than a direct comparison with, say, the Masters in your example. Remember- beauty is almost purely subjective- research on 'Venus of Willendorf' and head on from there to find out~

Oh, and about ~Fallencypt's instance- its still beauty- from another's perspective. Another example- look up on user Wanimal's post on Sketchbooks. Mostly photography and some very graphic and disturbing images- but for alot of the users frequenting and posting comments, its completely original, inspirational, and 'beautiful'. In others' comments you will only see flames and scathing posts and remarks- elitist nature? or beauty in the eye of the beholder?
